.. But now you don't have to make a tower of blocks to make a tower of fences.. You can directly place fences and torches on other fences..

I've tried, but they just kept disappearing.
It's weird.
It only happens on one of my worlds though.
Which happens to be a pre-1.6 world.
Because it doesn't have grass either.
