Is mod loader or something of that sort actually required to use mods? I know some mods aren't compatible with it, is there some other way to execute mods or something?

Someone needs to create a bot mod for minecraft, that or some sort of mod that spawns a single pigman that doesn't move. And I don't mean like the op mod, I mean something that can be saved and used in smp, like a mobspawner edit or something.
