I think they stay until you move like 6 chunks away, or 10 minutes. Not sure.

there's a handy mod called deathchest, or something like that. If you have a chest in your inventory when you die it plants it in the nearest possible spot and stores all of your stuff in it.

i put every item i had in a chest in a little hideout part in a cave along with a furnace and workbench
