you can break through any breakable  with your hands, you just can't pick the bricks up.

I can't seem to break through anything, doesn't everything turn impenetrable during the boss fight?

It is a floating sky world, which has many different animals and alot of other features and items added to it.
Aether is pretty much the nether but floating islands and lots of new stuff.

You need glowstone. Make a portal the same size as a nether portal, than take a bucket of water and right click in the portal.
