Protection = Better mining
Better mining = Materials
Materials = Building
Building = Better house
Better house = ???
??? = Profit.
Profit = ???.

Simplified: Armor = infinite profit.

Well in this amazing cave I found it seems to be infested with bad guys.

I play on normal and I have no use for armor.

I do use armor when I switch to hard to go monster hunting. but that's only when I go monster hunting. I use armor when I play aether too.

Usually I sport basic leather but there seems to be a lack of cows.

i make armor all the time. i never make diamond though unless i have been no lifeing and have a gigantic stockpile. i'll usually use leather but sometimes i get plenty of iron and just use that.
