If you stay at 1.7.3 and attempt to join a 1.8 server you'll likely be booted or crash instantly because 1.8 will have a stuff TON of new things.

I'm pretty sure old worlds will be 1.8 compatible, for the terrain generation I believe you have to enter a new chunk.

No they will, they will just start generating terrain differently.

I meant in the sense that when you generate entirely new chunks the terrain will be completely different.

So you could be in a desert and it would suddenly pop into mountains.
