These snow golems seem lame. When I heard the name I was thinking of some really cool looking snow covered rock monster. But no, its a snowman that doesn't even deal damage and is basically worthless. Seems more like a mod than what should be in the game.

They were called Snowmen up until an hour or two after the name was announced, when Notch happened upon someone's conversation about that specific person calling them Snow Golems, so he decided to make it official. Read the wiki article, I helped straighten up that explanation. It's only given such a name from a fan Notch approved as official.

Snow Golems, snowmen the player makes that move around the map leaving a trail of snow, and throw snowballs at other mobs, which provokes them to attack it and/or the player.

Yeah I know. They're still basically useless and they aren't what I was hoping for. Though now that I think of it maybe you could set them up to lure mobs into a trap.
