To clear up confusion on the size change of large biomes, here's a couple of maps

Normal biomes:

From size issues and as one block is a metric square, a normal biome is about one fourth of a small city. Pretty outlandish compared to earth.

Large biomes:

As for large biomes, they would be about two thirds of a small country, and more realistically scaled.

I'd have to say plains are my favorite biome. Easy on the framerate, pleasing to look at, easy to cross, easy to see incoming enemies.
Only cons would be lack of resources, primarily wood.
