All you do is you hack at the tree leaves, then you should be able to collect tree seeds, then you can plant them.

Chop down a tree. The leaves will drop sprouts which you plant on the ground, then wait.

I can't figure out how to smelt things anymore without the Flint. I tried lava and they just disappear :C

You have to make a furnace and put some fuel sources(coal or wood) in it and then put what you want to be cooked/smelted.
