This crafting you're talking about is in survival mode.

Really, you should buy the game. At least, get it now, before the beta version(when MP Survival comes out), that way you get it at a discount.

He said on twitter recently that it was based of infiniminer, although it's definitely been influenced by dwarf fortress and at one point he was talking about importing levels from dwarf fortress to minecraft.

I think if i update my java inf dev might run better for me. Although the trees look amazing they lag like a bat out of hell
