What we really need are contraptions.
(Levers, doors, traps, mine carts, etc.)

Notch is working on those, he mentioned a whole cord system to send impulses to different contraptions, such as doors, levers to cause the impulses, gates, dynamite detonation, mine cart track reversal etc.
