I'm rarely damaged in heart terms by creepers because i stay at the surface mostly and rarely go out at night,if only to get some string/arrows.

creeper only damaged my iron hat by half an armor piece and nothing else.

I've yet to get killed by a creeper or loose any of my work to them.

I probably just jinked myself though.

The creepers will adapt and use one creeper as a launcher and shoot their friends at your house. They're stubborn like that.

Better idea:
Make a house/castle on a plateau or mountain and make the cactus wall. After that, place lava around the perimeter to make a lavafall.

Another Good idea:

go far enough out into the ocean until the closest bit of land is faded, look for a small island, expand it until you're good then just build a few boats and there you go, i've been like that on hard difficulty for a long time now and i haven't been attacked once...except for in mines :/
