I think Ghasts are the physical embodiment of Notch's evil.
Our beloved Notch has been keeping something from us. He is serious about development on Minecraft, he wants to make money from his game as well as provide people with hours of fun with something he created. But he has another motive for creating this game we've come to know and love so much.
Notch has a sense of evil deep inside of him. He doesn't like to admit it, and he has yet to come to terms with it, but he knows it's there. When Notch finds himself, seeming to run out of ideas, he contacts it. He let's it consume him. He lets it code for him.
In this state, Notch loves nothing more than the thought of giving us, his dear players, horrible nightmares. This thing adds to the game it's own artistic touch. It loves seeing players be lured into dark depths by the promise of riches. Zombies, living skeletons, creepers, giant spiders, slimes. Most of those are pretty scary, right? Notch came up with only one of these monsters. Ever wonder why slimes are less detailed and far less horrifying than the other monsters? They're the only monster that was created without the aim of terrifying players. Notch's little attempt at trying not to listen to the voices. This is why Slimes are so rare, yet so abundant when you find them. The voices inside Notch don't like slimes. They don't like him trying to stand on his own. They tried to hide them. When you find slimes, you're actually hearing Notch's cries for help. He's trying let you know that he still has some control.
But now, they're tired of hiding. The voices have taken over. They want to show themselves. They want to meet you.
For so long they have watched you... they want you to come to them. They want you to come to their hell.
