Gold is very, very soft in real life. Actually, it is so soft you don't even need to smelt it to shape it. The Aztecs used it to make fancy headwear, which obviously isn't armor.

I'm fine with gold not being weapons or armor grade. It can't stop a blade worth stuff and it can't hold an edge.
