No, they just have either played a lot using the default enough to want to see something different, or they actually like the texture set more than the default, as opinion differs per person.

They are infact chicken hypnotising creeper spirits contained within a small white casing made out of reinforced glass , and the souls are trying to escape and kill you so badley they create enough friction to generate level 14 light. I find them useful as torches.
