I have hosted a server before. Me and my cousin played together and it worked fine. We just couldn't go to the nether which is ok.

About how to open the file. The only thing it says to open it with is: Internet Explorer, Microsoft Word, Microsoft works word processor, paint, Microsoft live photo gallery, Media player, word pad, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Works spreadsheet, Notepad, Livemoviemaker,Media center, and photo viewer. Plz just anwser my question

The problem is that you're not opening the .exe

Well turns out it doesn't say Minecraft server.exe, Its says Minecraft server. I downloaded it off the minecraft page so i dont think i got the wrong one. Nien says to put a .exe at the end. do i just change the file name?

I think the server runs off of Java Runtime Environment, so if it doesn't automatically open with Java chances are that you don't have the latest version installed either...

IMO minecraft is best played with a few IRL friends. My friend's MacBook with 4gb of RAM and a dual core processor works almost flawlessly for what we need. I suggest getting a few friends together and having someone host - it's miles better than singleplayer.
