Passive mobs spawn in a light level of 8 or more as long as they have enough space.

I'm on my friend's multiplayer server, searching for wolves in the nearby forests. So far no luck, but I've only spent 3 Minecraft days looking for them.

I thought animals such as cows, and sheep only spawn on grass?

No, I don't think that's so. I've had a sheep spawn inside of my house, and it's got a wool and wood floor.

no they're only supposed to spawn on grass. im sure. the game IS in beta though, so weird stuff can happen sometimes.
