You can put the sign above the door and it'll still lock it

Yeah, and you can put signs on the sides of chests and furnaces so they aren't in the way.

Great plugin: minecart mania. You can do soo much with that mod, just look it up.

pretty sure items and such in singleplayer save into the world file
