These are much more usually appealing and take up only 1 block. And I don't have to deal with lava.

Special 1/4th wood blocks

I just connected the windmill to my first piece of machinery, no more hand-cranking my mill stone!
this post made me want to get this mod
brb downloading it

It started raining, so my windmill went ballistic.

Not as bad as I thought, it just broke the gearbox directly connected to the blades. Pain in the ass to replace though. I considered removing the ladder from my elevator shaft earlier but I'm definitely keeping it; if it rains while I'm down there I'd be in deep stuff since the elevator won't go up without that windmill.

Cover the windmill, and add a staircase just in case.

If the windmill is covered it won't run (though "due to convection currents" this doesn't apply to windmills placed in the Nether)

I did happen to have a ladder inside left over from when I was building it. It was one of the more unique moments of my Minecraft career too; running through the rain from my house in the dark to the windmill and climbing a dimly lit ladder to the top of the stone building, standing in the window next to the spinning blades of the windmill and looking out at the rain and the various monsters roaming far below...I felt like I was in a movie or something. It was spine-tingling.

So
Do I need any sort of internet connection to play SSP?

Only the first time. You can run it offline after that.
