I attacked a yellow swet and thought it gave me the book, so I thought "oh it's some sort of NPC helper or something?" so I went up to another one and it threw me up and I fell off

my aether portal is underground so I landed in some remote and unfindable location

No, it's just that deleting META-INF is required when installing any mods.
