Although I still think it's much easier to just delete .minecraft (backing up saves) and just re-install it automatically with the .exe

But faster than backing up your world saves.

That's just going into your saves folder of .minecraft and copy-paste the files to desktop or wherever.

You don't need to backup saves to reinstall Minecraft.. You just really need to only delete the version file inside the bin file. Next time Minecraft starts up, it should start to download the fresh jar files.

Just download the launcher from the site. I don't know if that'll force update the first time you use it or not, though, so just do it the next time you need to.

Perhaps the problem is you are looking in the in-game options, the options are in the launcher right above the 'log-in'.

I was talking about the log-in screen. I don't have the new ones and hoped the update updated it.

i fell in some lava, lost all my stuff, over 80 iron, like 12 gold, about 3 diamonds, a dimaond pick, steel tools (minus a hoe) 3 buckets, 40 torchs, and about 2 stacks of redstone and then some

I never bothered to learn how to use redstone. I just use it for infinite obsidian.
