The "ripped up map" is a pile of pumpkin seeds. to the right are watermelon seeds.

Hehe, it was a livestream group that started the whole Herobrine stuff. I believe it was the first one Notch advertised that he was in. Pretty sure that's stated in the Wiki too.

I asked notch, it's a "Brick debris". It's finally mapped to terrain.png so Texture pack authors have a little more control over visual effects.
