Mobs don't de-spawn.

And jeb said that mobs don't respawn. (except enemies)

It's just very rare for they respawn.

If you move 128 they either despawn or go dormant until found back.

Is there any specific guides as to how to find Mushroom Biomes, or is it just random as usual?

I have a really nice house design that involves the Mushroom biome, with giant Mushroom towers and a mooshroom stable

They're random. They're island biomes, you'll have to go out in the ocean.

I've been drifting for two days ingame, and I've already got a forgetload of items, found a cliff to temporarily live on, and I think I found an ocean

You'll probably never find one on Survival. It took me a while on Creative flying over the ocean after coming out of a Nether portal after traveling far there. Just randomly happened while I was looking for land for villages during my first test.

I might make a "Quest for the Shroom Biome!" as it has sadly never been done before (I dont think)

I'm sure I could entertain myself with 10+ episodes of just trying to find a loving land of shrooms.

Uh, no. But you can make dirt and hoe it, I don't think that will up route the crops. Mycelium can go under saplings and flowers, dislodging them.

They'd need a new model. Notch said he didn't like how torches looked as held lights, so he didn't implement it. He likely wouldn't make glowsticks like that. Besides, that's not the property of a Blaze rod. It would seem it's what makes them float. If he does make throwing Ender Pearls teleport you where they landed, then Blaze Rods could make you fly on Survival.
