Okay so what is the procedure for brewing potions? Is it just
  • Craft bottle
  • Fill and craft cauldron (to fill, right click with water bucket)
  • craft the little potion stand thingy
  • Fill the bottle with water
  • Put bottle in potion stand thingy with proper ingredients

That's where I am stuck. Is there a link to the lists of ingredients and their subsequent effects to the player?

Just wondering :)

check the minecraft wiki for the potions/recipes for them (and probably the procedure used to make them)
minecraftwiki.net

Nether Wart makes a base for other potions.

Sugar makes it a speed potion.
Magma Cream makes a fire-resistance potion.
Blaze Powder makes a strength potion (doesn't work).
Spider Eye makes a poison.

Redstone increases the time of the effects but downgrades the results.
Glowstone increases the results but decreaces the time.
Fermented Spider Eye gives negative effects and downgrades the results.

Also the cauldron is unneeded, you just need a brewing stand.

For the moment, you put Netherwart in first, then either sugar, blaze powder, magma cream, or a ghast tear, and then you put in either glowstone dust or redstone dust. glowstone makes the potion more powerful, redstone makes the potion last longer. Sugar gives you a speed bonus, blaze powder gives you a damage bonus, magma cream makes you fireproof, ghast tears give you instant health like food did before 1.8.

I knew I had forgotten something! :c

Is it possible to be under the effects of multiple potions, sort of like a 'superpotion'?

Can someone PLEASE tell me WHY this totem is on my world? I didn't build it. I haven't found any dungeons in this world!
