Well the only 'abandoned' things are mineshafts and strongholds and they are random, except for mineshafts which are not random and are generated in every chunk.

used MC Nostalgia to play Indev again. holy hell, floating islands were so loving cool

seriously, the code's available, why can't Notch just update that to be infinite/in it's own dimension

(i mean the new-ish sky dimension's knobby and weird but the old isles were like pointed at the bottom and flat on the top and perfect)
