I Imigiane that it would be like a flat portal, like an end portal but made out of something different. When activated a beam would go to the moon, so it would have to be night time. Stepping in the beam would take you to the moon.

As for the reason to travel there, maybe a special ore. Maybe even a Mini-Boss.
