i know a way to hide it but have them taken away put a 2 high tunnel and put pistons down.
do the same on the bottom. stickypistons that is. now wire it to a lever add the iron blocks = DONE!

You could make a really complicated multi-piston array underneath that push the doors up from the bottom.

But how would the second and third layer of blocks get moved?  I want full solid block doors, unless you mean using gravel but to be honest that ruins the look and feel...

Then the clay soldiers would suffer from "lemmings syndrome." They'd see the chest full of nice items then do a dive into lava to get to them. Wash, rinse and repeat until all the soldiers have either dove into lava or killed each other.
