The first city looks like every city built in Minecraft, full of stone, cobble, and slabs. Not very interesting.  The roads on the second one are all right, though. Cities in general are just no fun in Minecraft.

its a game with a fantasy medieval setting
that's why we have swords and bows and not guns.

i've been playing minecraft with no mods lately and it seems more challenging and fun without mods.

but normally i use.

• optifine
• rei's minimap
• zombe mod
• mo creature - isn't that default now though?

Use Zombie Awareness and Hardcore Ender Dragon.

It's practically vanilla but way harder.
