You can't put tracks on them anyways at all. I wouldn't want that anyway. The railways are 5 blocks wide, with fence, rail, glowstone, rail, fence in that order. Fences for ensuring that no animals/mobs/people get in the way of the railways.

this is better, the roads break up all of the stonyness and the floor isnt made of, yknow

I don't know if you've been to somewhere like New York City or Baltimore but it's not like everything is built on grass. Sure there are open garden areas and parks but when people think of a modern city they tend to think concrete, stone, etc.

I don't get it, this is a modern city. I really don't care if Notch intended for people to build hamlets or manors. I like building modern cities, others build medieval cities, etc. It's all a matter of preference. For the material choices, like I said, people tend to think concrete, stone, etc. for cities.
