cool it until it is just out of liquid form, then use it on an anvil that is created by using a hammer on a stone block. hammers are made in the knapping gui by making a 2x high rectangle.

what does "!Caution!" on the unshaped zinc mean while im trying to smelt sphalerite

it means you may lose the metal if you heat it more.

So I'm guessing this is regulated light, whereas the light coming through is about as much as you should get for the object blocking it. I'm going to tweet him about how this might effect light-levels.
