Well I did download Combat Arms, but how do I start.  After I installed it, it didn't create a desktop shortcut.  I tryed opening it in other ways, but nothing has worked so far.

You really don't want to start.  I think some copies of Combat Arms are self-aware and hide their executables so that you can't experience it's horribleness.

Try crossfire instead.

All of these meet your requirements, they are free (altitude's demo is free, but it's fully multiplayer even with the demo), and the only one that's gory is toribash.

that game looks so cool. i mean, why hasn't anyone done that before? a guy shooting LIGHTNING from his hands? there have obviously been tons of people wanting to do that, but theirs probably would have crappy lightning physics. this looks realistic though.
