Author Topic: Is it dangerous to be on the computer during a storm?  (Read 1803 times)

Is it really?
Its not that dangerous to get your neighborhood burned down. :D

That depends how bad the storm is, really. If it's very close to you, really you need to be off a computer and showers and such. If it's kinda far off, stay on 'til it starts developing if it does. My computer has a stopper on it, so if the power goes out it won't fry my comp, just the stopper (D:)

Funny you ask because a friend of mine had his motherboard zapped to oblivion by a lighting strike.

A surge protector should protect you from electrical surges, but against lighting? Who knows.

Well I have a surge protect thingy...and the "storm" is basically a bit of thunder and light rain really...I just wanna know so if it starts getting bad >_<

you should be fine.

A storm (any kinda) can cause your computer to ahve an irregular supply of energy coming to it. It is highly reccomended that you turn off and unplug everything if a thunderstorm is in your area.

Well for a start hear thunder turn pc off. hear more thunder un plug. lightning keep it off until storm goes away. If it goes over night keep it off. until tomorrow when it clears.

Oh and one time my computer got hit by lighting and i had to call someone to fix it.

Oh and it wouldnt turn on.

A lightning bolt came through my window and hit my TV once. The TV survived somehow, although it's colors were empirically forgeted. The weird thing is I was sleeping, and I woke up right before the bolt hit, kind of like a subconsious mechanism warning me something awesome and terrifying was going to happen.

Did you see it? :o
What exactly happened other than you waking up?

Lightning likes metal.

I never start unplugging stuff when lightning comes.
In fact, I even don't care whether it is lightning or not.
Nothing has happened so far for me either.

thats bad for ya computer. it could go in even if you dont see it.

I don't know if these are related, but we had a thunderstorm here and some aging power cables underground started arcing and burned up. We lost power in my whole block, and when ConEdison fixed it, I discovered half of the appliances in my apartment were fried.
