I kill those before entering the water, other times I go in the water with the wrench, knife, crowbar, and glock and attack it.
edit: You will only encounter the Killer fish in that chapter in opposing force.

i saw an itchythosaur in a co-op server in HL2:DM in some foggy water and even though it wasnt going to kill me.
I never went back into that water again

Lol, I remember one of the first missions was to get a boat and go to an island, so I was like "screw that" and jumped in the water and started swimming there, so a few seconds later I hear this sound and BAM, a lurker shark jumped out and ate me.  Scared the crap out of me the first time I saw it, but now I like to swim around near the coast and taunt it/see if I can out swim it.
