Sounds like a real antique if it's Lever-action and using .22 Short.They weren't manufactured with Picatinny rails, silly. If you wanted a put a scope on, mount a damn rail on or screw it in and mangle up the furniture.

My Bushmaster AR-15 came with a RIS system so I can put some mean stuff on it. But stuff is pricey.
