The color of a troll's blood is what sets their position in troll hierarchy. It's all in a sort of rainbow fashion, purple is best and red is worst and everything in between is arranged as in a rainbow. This is why Equius is so arrogant, but still looks to Gamzee as if he is superior. He was also angry that Aradia (who he has a huge crush on) had red blood. All their typing colors reflect their blood colors, except probably Karkat, he's probably just hiding his actual blood color so he won't be judged by the others.
