To our current science, perhaps. But then again, they said the sound barrier couldn't be broken, let alone 50+ years before that people scoffed at the thought of humans flying. Look how far we've come. :)

There wasn't really any scientific theory stating we couldn't and why we couldn't go faster than sound. Also, 50 years before breaking the sound barrier, humans were still floating around the air in balloons.

Which is why I stated 50+ years which doesn't set it at exactly 50 years ago. It can be more. In any case, people said it was impossible to fly. They said that the Titanic was impossible to sink. They said it was impossible to fit a whole computer into one room. They said a lot of things were impossible that we do every day and take for granted. The speed of light is only the next step. True, however, you now know the basic layout of what you need to do and what works with what so when it restarts, you'll be able to select officers and attributes to better serve your ship. That's why I wish I had a chance to play Beta because then I'd be able to figure all of that out ahead of time.

Err, kinda, then again it would be really simple if we could fold 3rd dimensional space through the dimension above it. Hence the term "warp", as a broad term used for this type of thing. Of course warp travel is not actually moving faster then light, just bending space time.
