-snip

Most skilled, professional developers who love making mods don't have all that much time to put into making mods. But if someone can charge a bit for making high quality mods he can put a lot more time and effort into doing so. This doesn't mean that he is just doing it for the money.

The game maker benefits also, because his game becomes more popular because of the high quality mods.

My thoughts:

  • Introducing a mod market could theoretically improve quality (because of competition), but it could also create monopolies because some modders are more prominent than others.
  • If the key system isn't effective, pirates could resell mods, thus allowing them to steal investments of time and willpower.
  • If this was to be made, I think it should start off with a virtual currency to test the waters. Then if it does well, implement real cash-to-virtual cash micro-transactions.

Currently, modders make addons for the purpose of pleasing other modders and non-modders.  Adding a mod market to the equation could drastically alter that relationship, for good or ill.  Just food for thought.

Just to comment on the monopoly part, I don't see how prominenet modders would have one. (Seeing as anyone can make a mod with the skills). It might be a good idea to test it out first.

No, it couldn't, since RTB is pretty much worthless without the network effect (something it would probably lose ASAP, especially in BL, if he started charging).
What is the mod manager if nobody uploads any add-ons?
What is the server preferences manager if no add-ons support it?
What is RTB Connect without users?

I think if RTB were to make money, it would be off of ether getting paid by Blockland, or by selling ad space.

The main problem is this system wouldn't be sustainable in Blockland. It's inconvenient to most of the players and, if they could buy, the revenue wouldn't be enough to justify the work.

I actually agree, that at Blocklands current state it wouldn't be sustainable. My thinking is that Blockland, if it got onto steam, would grow pretty quickly in its user base :].

-Thanks to all those who supported, and to those who actually gave real counter arguments :].

No one can or should help someone script an event that literally runs another game on a screen in-game.

I don't know what he was suggesting, but it doesn't mean that people should be harrasing him over it. Sorry that was off topic, my bad :p.

No it doesn't.

I have that one in my signature.

http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=190789.0  <-- Dumbest thread ever made.

So a younger member of the community posts an idea, and instead of helping him and encouraging him, yall harras him? Ingenious. Bravo.

Stop fighting.

This is bullstuff, really.

You can never get this to work. We are a community of kids and teens and no one will pay for stuff, honestly, we already know that you want to make an economy of buying addons and p2p. It is stupid though. People make addons because they know some people with enjoy it. They don't do it for the money. Some server hosters today, want people to join their original servers. If they started forcing people to p2p, everyone has absolutely
no choice of a server they want, because a barrier creates a "you cannot play good server unless you pay, go ahead and play family rp."

Going onto the fact that people will scam. If you think that a server is good, you pay for it, and you get banned the next minute. If you think an addon is good, you pay for it, then you suddenly have a crappy mod that doesn't say what it really is.

Right, then there should be a system in place, like administrators endorcing addons etc. It should all be official, and I doubt that more then a few addons would actually be sold.
We are a community of teens and kids, who you forget, paid for Blockland.

The game that I have using as an example, again, Mount and blade which, actualy sold the Napoleonic wars mod, has only been selling that one mod.

Creating a system for us to sell addons wouldn't make most people attempt to sell their addons. Only the elite and best ones would be sold.

Just wondering if anyone brought this up:

Does this idea not violate blockland's EULA?
IIRC, there's a part that's similar to: "Content created for this game can not be commercially distributed, on a pay-to-use system"

Some deal could just be worked out with badspot, or does that have to do with GarageGames?

Any 'professional developer' playing Blockland that wants to make add-ons is already doing so.
You're not going to make a 'professional developer' that doesn't play blockland join, learn the language, and make add-ons for a few dollars when he could make better things with better languages that would reach a larger audience and sell them for more money.

That might be true, but if Blockland where to get on steam, what about then, when the audience could grow quite considerably?

what post? are you talking about YOUR post? are you trying to say you're an "experienced software developer and investor"?

or did you mean to link to something?

if it's the first one, that's a really funny joke and you should go troll somewhere else. but if it's the latter you might want to correct yourself.

My dad actually got fed up at what was being posted. He mentioned something about democrats and decided to post using my acount.

Look I know there isn't one person here that agrees, but I think a lot of you are missing what I'm talking about - and I have repeated it several times.

All this would do would make it so that there would be some new, high quality mods and the free ones would still be there.

I think the problem with this topic is that the community is mostly a bunch of young people, including my self. It seems you all can't wrap your heads around the idea that
professional developers CAN make better addons, and WILL if there is a great incentive to do so. This is a fact. Please stop trying to deny it.

I also get the feeling that a lot of you are reading the original post, forming a quickly asserted opinion, and then joining in the bandwagon that this is a bad idea.

There are a few people here that I have seen actually give some good arguements on why this would be a bad idea (I have heard people saying that this community is full of kids, it would be better to just donate to developers... etc.)

I'm at the point of giving up on convincing you guys lol, so there you go =] (Becides there is only one person that matters in convincing, obviously Badspot).
