I don't like Super Mario Galaxy 2 as much as the original for these reasons:
You can't swim fast by spinning any more. There's a huge delay between spins.
There is only one kind of Comet, which has different effects, rather than several different kinds with one effect unique to it.
Most galaxies are much shorter than the galaxies in Super Mario Galaxy.
There are way too many recycled bosses and ideas. So far, I've fought three bosses that are literally taken right out of its predecessor, along with the bird-riding (ray-surfing) and ball-rolling, plus the galaxies' themes themselves.
The music is nowhere near as epic as the first, and sometimes gets annoying. (Yoshi Egg repeats way too much.) The Boss Level music hardly sounds like an intimidating battle is just a few jumps and spins away.
The Faceship is too small for my taste. I loved "venturing" out to the Observatory, going throughout the different rooms.
Rock Mario is slightly hard to control and his jump is pointless on every galaxy I've played it on; you will go flying off the edge of the galaxy.
You could move far too quickly under water in the original game, making it more cheap and less of a challenge. Almost making the shell pointless, aside from killing things underwater.
The comet system doesn't hinder the levels themselves; you're nitpicking.
The galaxy lengths are relatively the same, you're just being paranoid. Hell, they're even more difficult. The game's difficulty was based around the implement of "players who have played and beaten the first game."
The boss battles are half recycled ideas, yes. The original boss battles weren't that amazing to begin with, though. Also, the levels are different to the extent of where they wouldn't completely ruin the original style of the game. I felt as if the job they did was perfect for the style, more specifically a sequel.
The music is just as good, and COMPLETELY different. They even improved on some things (bowser's basic level them was revamped to sound more like the '64 version). Even more so, the music had a larger budget.
The Faceship is boring, yes. This is something we can both agree on.
Rock mario should be hard to control. Without having hard controls, there would be no challenge, due to how ridiculously fast and powerful the thing is.
