Because in Fallout 1 and 2 the muties weren't called meta-humans. Meta-Human is just a word coined by Bethesda. In the old games they were just called Mutants.

In Fallout 3, they're called Super Mutants.
There's one friendly Super Mutant you meet who says he prefers to be called a "Meta Human" because it seems more fitting.

Yeah the thing is, I took too long guessing the code so the whole thing blew up. I went back and entered the right code in as quickly as I could. Makes be feel better doing the right thing, even if it was just a game.

I don't know, I got lazy half way through the game. Was tired of being killed so I enabled god mode. I also had to no-clip a few times when the game bugged out. But hey I wanted a story.
