Author Topic: Buying an electric guitar  (Read 2151 times)

I'm looking to buy an electric guitar and I have came across this starter kit. For those who know anything about guitars, is this a good deal and if not, could you find something else preferably under $300

By the lack of response, I'm guessing none of you know anything about guitars

I know more about basses than I do guitars.

Basses are cool. There's a reason there's a "B A" in bass.

Edit: as a general rule, starter kits are just that- starter kits. Most contain decent instruments that are great for learning and cheap enough that you can decide if you want to get serious with the instrument without a serious investment, but don't go running off and doing serious work (playing in a band, recording, etc.) without buying a real axe.

It looks nice, but your best bet is to go and buy a guitar from a musical store. Then, you can see how it actually feels. Amazon and online guitars are unpredictable- Some even are misssing strings. And that amp looks like crap.

Go with what Anti-Block said.

The best way to go with buying a guitar is going to either a local music store, or something like Guitar Center. Personally, I don't like Dean Guitars. IMO, Ibanez and Fenders are my favourite brands.

I have a Flying V and a couple other guitars, a  steel guitar, and a tiny spanish guitar.

also I have this rod thingy that makes these cool hard rock screeching sounds when you get your hands near it.

Yes. I love fenders.

Probably just an electromagnet that plays with your guitar's pickups. I do that with cordless drills, fans, vacuums, etc. It's pretty fun.

I have this and I love it  :cookieMonster:

That guitar seems pretty good.

Dean is generally a good first purchase.  But only that, a first purchase.  They have great starter packs, just make sure that the guitar you do buy isn't 3/4 size.

As Anti-Block said, you cant buy a guitar until you have held it in your hands.  I actually highly prefer a fat neck, while the "norm" is a skinny neck.  I don't mind whatever wacky shape the guitar is, because I play low to my waist.  It all depends on the user.

Also, you may want to consider an acoustic guitar.  You can get one now and play some excellent music.  Bands like Green Day, Led Zeppelin, The Who, and many others have a large focus on acoustic guitars.  But that depends on the music you want to play.

Some of my picks:
Acoustic:
Ibanez PC25WC - I have a very similar guitar, the sound is pretty good and it feels really nice to hold.
Fender T Bucket 300 - Acoustic/Electric, really nice, low price.
Electric:
Ibanez Jumpstart Package - Ibanez is a good company for cheap guitars, and this doesn't seem too bad.
Epiphone Les Paul - IMO, Epiphone is the king of cheap guitars in quality.  Usually most expensive though.  Good guitar.

Also, if you go into a guitar center, skim the used section.  They are in pretty good condition generally and at really low prices.

I have only 2 years of guitar experience, so take it as you want to :P

DO NOT buy them from Walmart or any place other than an offical music store, the good guitars are pretty expensive, but they're worth it.

2 years of guitar experience and you recommend a Mikro to him? You do know that Mikro's are only 3/4 the size of a normal guitar, right?

Rave doesn't know what he's talking about half the time.
