Author Topic: Possible computer build, maybe?  (Read 1914 times)

So my parents have finally gotten it through their thick skulls that a desktop computer you bought 6 years ago will not run anywhere close to as well as it did when you first bought it, especially when you've upgraded its parts to the maximum. In other words, our 6-year-old desktop finally died (my dad still has hope for it, he took it into Geek Squad at Best Buy to run diagnostics) because of a faulty PSU (as old as the computer). So, he's been shopping around for parts and whatnot and has come up with the following list of computer parts. I'm literally copying this from what he's written down; if something sounds strange, it's most likely because I can't read his handwriting:

Motherboard: LGA 1366 Core i7 ATX
PSU: Corsair 650W
Processor: Intel Core i7 (3.2 GHz) 960 series/8MB cache
Memory: (Triple channel) 12GB DDR3 (3 x 4GB) (he wrote "CRUCIAL: 1333" next to this, not entirely sure what it means, but I think I have some idea of it)
HDD: Seagate OR Western Digital 1TB SATA drive/32MB cache
DVD drive: 24x DVD ± RW Super Multi-Drive
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
USB: 6x USB 2.0/2x USB 3.0 (on back) (yay USB 3.0)
Graphics card: NVIDIA PCI Express 1GB 16x GT 460
Monitor: Samsung 24" LED SMS (not completely sure what he wrote here...?) 1920 x 1080
Case: (again, not sure what he wrote here) "Cooler Master HAF Case" (...?)

Total price: $1141.38

Opinions? Suggestions? Worth the price? It looks pretty awesome to me, but then again I know there are many people here that know leagues more about computers than myself. He talked to a guy at cpusolutions.com to get all this information, they do custom builds for what seem to be relatively good prices.

Thanks in advance.

um tell him to get a new one...

Buying a new PSU would be so much incredibly more cheaper.

That's a loving baller ass build.

I'm jealous of 12 gigs of ram.

Why would anyone need 12 gigs of RAM?

Why would anyone need 12 gigs of RAM?
Multitasking, powerful servers, etc.

for the same cost as 8 gb of RAM I could probably afford a separate server.

Really?
Really?

Future proofing.
Anyway, seems like a decent build. Has room for a GPU upgrade if necessary, too.

12 GB of RAM? Damn, I got 4 GB. :c

EDIT: Well I do have a SD Card with readyboost, so I get about 3 more GB of RAM. 7 GB total.

You might want to get a better psu for upgrading purposes. I would also move away from socket 1366 now that the 1155's are fixed. They are quite a bit more powerful and offer more overall. RAM is cheap so I guess that 12gb isn't bad but moving to sandy-bridge (1155) you would probably want to move down to 8gb which is still more than enough for the time being.

That's a link to the cpu which performs quite a bit better. I should add that 1366 is aging and has can't really proceed any farther as far as performance goes.

Obviously motherboard choice is up to your dad so I won't even bother posting a link.

I remember this one post on this other forum  :cookieMonster:

"My Vista carries at least 600 GB of memory and can handle some of the most latest games."

for the same cost as 8 gb of RAM I could probably afford a separate server.
Not only is 8 GB of RAM cheap, but you also only have to pay for it once.

I own a home server :o

I love this son-of-a-bitch.

He was 35$ on Newegg.

Now he's like 400$ B )
