My windows 7 has had few crashes, and all have been out of the blue and do not cause any effects.

You should probably defrag, maybe keep your PC on like I do and let it defrag itself every once in a while (it's set up to do that by default).

Also, run CCleaner.

My laptop, with Windows Vista, has been running perfectly since Christmas 2009.

I haven't had one problem. I would like to see your reasoning about why you hate Vista, or are you just bandwagoning with no real reason?
