This only happens in hardmode, once you beat him he won't spawn by himself.

All the hardmode bosses will spawn by themselves from time to time if you haven't beaten them, and won't stop until you do.
It's not a constant bombardment, it's just sort of random

Lol understandable typo. But yes, he is correct. Hardcore is a character creation option. Hardmode is essentially the second half of the game after you beat the wall of flesh.

When Wraiths are not passing through blocks they are unable to hover above about 3 blocks in height. Keep your NPCs above that height to ensure that Wraiths don't kill them.

As long as your house is rooted to the ground, Wraiths and Reapers can get to them.
