Author Topic: Video Games - Art Form?  (Read 1963 times)

Is it bad that I thought of Minecraft being a form of art as a Video Game?

Dumb response, not that I expected anything intelligent from Monocle.

Hey, look, its Yuki coming in here trying to save the day, and acting a bitch! Woo hoo!

Let me explain my answer; videogames are an art form, yes, they take tremendous talent to program, model, skin, act out/voice act. It also takes an incredible amount of science for motion capture, and for motion rendering from an outside source (the dudes who dress up in body suits). Granted, there's all this intelligence behind it, but its still a videogame, a lot of kids don't have self-control over what they do (and its perfectly visible even on this forum, 90% of people here are completely reliant on their computer for all means of communication, and entertainment), thus they get addicted and it gets in the way of their lives, whether it be school, or friends. The government has funding projects to make parks to get kids outside and such, so why would they fund a project to keep kids inside? Seems completely stupid to me.

No, you stupid stuff.

No, you stupid stuff.
Okay then, god.

No need to be a cigarette about it.

It gets pretty damn annoying when people see a topic and some game comes to mind, then say some stupid stuff like "is it bad if I thought of so and so game?"
In this case, it's almost exactly like saying "is it bad if I appreciate Minecraft and like to play it?"

LA Noire and Heavy Rain = Art
PSMove table tennis = not art

Someone tell me this is not art and this does not look beautiful.

Link for being too huge.

heavy rain is not art
LA Noire I'm not sure about, never played it

Video games are entertainment. They're games. Saying they're art is like saying scrabble is art.

Black Ops isn't art, it's just mud on the wall.

Arrange the letters to make it look pretty!

If video games are art, then minecraft is a box of crayons with a neat picture of the kind of stuff you can draw on the back.

Then what is music? or Cinematography? Those are art forms that aren't painting. Grats though, you managed to actually say something stupider than Monocle.

Video games are art...

Saying video games aren't art because they're entertainment is like saying music and movies aren't art.

A true artist doesn't care what other people will think about his or her work, it's all about expressing his or her creativity.

Most videogames (and other mainstream entertainment forms) don't fit what I said earlier. The creators of most games are trying to create something that will sell. Sure, when it comes to graphical styles there might be some elements of creativity, but as a whole a videogame is not art.
