phlog is good for getting to know the basics of ambushing and your limit as pyro
backburner slowly eases you in to using airblast while still helping with ambushing and extra damage
degreaser is for when you're confident with your abilities
and flamethrower is just a sidegrade

what im saying is, not so good pyros will do better with phlog/bb than they would with grease cause they are still learning
in a skilled pyros hands the degreaser IS the better choice though

and most people consider the flare to be a side grade to shotty if you can aim well

no, beginners should start with the stock flame.

the only time I will ever use Flare Gun is if I'm dealing with a team who just doesn't know how to deal with sentry guns
switch to flare, pick off engie, blow up sentry, resume normal pyro duties

i use the flare gun at long range, so that i'm more helpful to my team overall
if you're close enough to use a shotgun well, then just burn them

tf2 is a game about balance. you want to play at long range? play the sniper.
the pyro is supposed to be a close range class, and the majority of the weapons are built for it
you can easily dodge a flare gun shot if you're not an idiot.
