Spike bat seems quicker than the axe but not as powerful.
I say on defence, you should go with axe.

when you hit a zombie with the bat it knocks them back a bit and sometimes the axe misses, use the axe for breaking doors to get wood, and use the bat just for defence

also my main door has taken damage, how can i fix or replace it

I smothered my wife, and ran like forget to the town, and now I am holed up in the second floor of a hotel I think, with like 10 zombies at the door. All I have is a hammer and wood. Is it possible to jump out the window?

Sprinted out the back door, got severely wounded in the groin, but I managed to make it and I am holed up in a house next to a really tall building and across the street from Knox Bank.
