One moment it's 750 KB/s, then it's 100kb/s, then it's 500 kb/s, then it stops for a bit, then it's at 1 mb/s

It does that because it sees that the demo already had half the stuff you needed like textures and models, so it just needed to download the extra stuff in the full version.
A lot of games do this with Steam.

Which amazes me, because I have a 100GB Liberty Elite Bigpond ADSL 1, which says I should get at least 300kbps. I live in the centre of Adelaide, near a university.

I usually get ~1.5mb/s.
However in the past week or so I've been seeing ~500kb/s or less. :/
It's not my internet connection, seeing as everything else is still just as fast as it used to be. Lately Steam has made a habit of being absolute stuff.
