i've played since 0.14, but i haven't even landed on the Mun. i can rarely get something to orbit Kerbin, and if I attempt to go anywhere else I end up just orbiting the sun in a near-kerbin orbit.

I've been playing even before there was a Mun. (I forget the specific version)

I haven't legitly landed on the Mun, or anything for that matter.
I have trouble getting things off of Kerbin.

Tip for space planes, make them in a reverse trike if you want to go realistic-ish to real planes, forward facing wheel, then two wheels behind it tend to tip over.

Also, the OP should have a list of suggested mods.

.7zed the KSP folder, installing on my school's Lenovo ThinkCentre M78 Tower Desktop PCs, which run games at ~150 FPS as apposed to my ~20 or less FPS.
EDIT:
horrible failure, seems the school replaced the HDD with a 1 Gb HDD.
handicaps.

Ugh. I got in a good orbit but I turned my ship in a direction and then I got into the Kerbin Escape.

Also if I go out far enough I cant move or use keys, even if I have fuel left.

do you have warp past 2?
if so you can't do anything.
