If you go over I think ~1100 thrust, the connection breaks due to too much stress or some such.

The best way to get to orbit is to get up to about 40km, and then pitch over and fire full thrust until you are going about 2300 m/s. (Vertical velocity should be around zero too)

Either that or you get up to about 10km and start pitching over until above is achieved. The atmosphere in this game is about 40km high, so going above that will minimize your air resistance. I did it just fine once. Some guy on youtube has a tutorial on how to do this as well.

Imo it's better to go a little higher just to be safe.

Throw fuel tanks on the bottom of the capsule and stick a rocket on the bottom of it. If it goes boom, screw with it some more.

In all seriousness though, read through this thread and check out other people's designs. Experiment with them. FOLLOW THE TUTORIALS. ;)

I was falling back to earth RIGHT at the border of the planet's gravitional pull. I lowered the thrust on the Ion engine all the way, and apparently it was right about it having the "tendency to explode". The explosion propelled my capsule past the border into space where I am no floating freely
