Author Topic: Is it possible to Run Age of Empires II without a moniter switch?  (Read 1082 times)

I can't seem to run Age of Empires II (My favorite RTS of all time) without switching my monitor out with my old xp monitor.
If I don't I get that message about my graphics not being able to initialize or some crap.
I've googled this for hours and all I've ever seen is Microsoft's Admins giving their generic answers such as
"Reinstall Direct x 9" or "Run as administrator" And none of that ever works.
But I have been able to get it to run on my computer by switching out monitors.
Problem is, my old monitor is stuff, its very run down, And in general, is heavy as forget. So I'd like to know, is there an actual way to run this amazing game with win 7?
Spec time.

Hopefully somebody knows how to make it run :C

your monitor shouldn't have anything to do with being able to run a game. and what do you mean "old xp monitor"? what the hell is an xp monitor?

Windows XP?

Except that still makes no sense, which is why he asked.

There is no monitor "built" for a specific operating system.

exactly.

well unless you count all in one macs or something..

MY point is. I had an XP tower, that used an older monitor.
Old monitor doesn't exactly specify how old.
It was from the Xp era of time.

It does. Because if I plug in my older monitor, which is a brick, and heavy. The game runs fine.
But with my newer monitor, which I got with my windows 7 computer, I can't run it at all. I've tried compatibility modes and changing res size and none of it works.

Running old games such as Age of Empires II or Black & White 1 are incredibly difficult to do on Windows 7 or Vista.  It's an incredibly delicate thing to do, some variations of hardware do and some don't.

Nobody knows why it works on few but not most.  Very specific hardware and software specifications affect it running apparently.

However I've never heard of a game running solely on one monitor but not another.

Moniters have nothing to do with stuff. They take what the GPU says and translate that into the image you see on the screen.

You should not post in any more computer help threads.
That is incorrect.

The GPU already creates the picture.  You could literally operate a computer without a monitor if you wanted to, except you wouldn't see stuff.  The monitor just is an actual screen to display the picture output from the GPU.

either way, If I switch to my older brickhouse heavy stuff monitor.
The game runs fine.
With this one, It does not. Won't even start up.

This is really weird.  A monitor has absolutely no serious way of interfering or interacting with the computer in a way that it could cause a program to run or not run.  Is the new one a widescreen?

That's... what.. I said?

How i play aoe II
Close explorer.exe and play with compability on 98

You said that the monitor generates the picture, which isn't true.  The monitor just shows the picture on a physical screen.  The GPU already generates the picture.

Yes.
I'm gonna try to do what Possesed Angel did.
Closed explorer.exe
Forgot to have a way to get to my folders.
